01Agreement

These terms are between you and ROMbug, based in Vermont, United States (“we”, “us”). They cover the ROMbug Onion application and this website.

By installing or using ROMbug Onion you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the software.

You must be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live, to buy a licence.

02What you get

ROMbug Onion is a web browser that routes your traffic through the Tor network. For a single payment of $19.99 we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use it on the computers you personally use, on Windows and on Linux.

The licence does not expire. Updates in the current major version are included at no extra charge. We may charge for a future major version, and we will say so plainly if we do.

What you are paying for

The Tor network is free, public infrastructure operated by volunteers and the Tor Project, and there are free browsers that use it. You are paying us for the software we wrote around it — the interface, the circuit view, the profile isolation, the packaging and the support — and not for access to the network, which nobody can sell you.

03Payment and refunds

The price is $19.99 in US dollars, charged once, through Stripe. There is no subscription, no automatic renewal and no account to cancel. Sales tax may be added where the law requires it.

Refunds

If the software does not work for you, contact us within 14 days of purchase and we will refund it in full. We may ask what went wrong, so we can fix it, but the refund does not depend on your answer. Nothing here limits any refund right you have under the law where you live.

Your licence key

We email your key at purchase. If you lose it, write to us from the address you bought with and we will re-issue it.

04Using the software properly

Your licence is for one person. Do not share, resell or publish your licence key. We may suspend a licence that appears to be shared.

You agree not to use ROMbug Onion to:

• break any law that applies to you;
• attack, scan or disrupt networks or systems you do not have permission to test;
• send spam, distribute malware, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to anything;
• harass, threaten or harm other people;
• infringe copyright or other intellectual property rights;
• distribute material that sexually exploits children, which we report to the authorities without exception.

We may revoke a licence that breaches this section, and we may do so without notice where the breach is serious.

You are also expected to respect the network itself. It is carried by volunteers who pay for the bandwidth. Do not use it for bulk downloads, torrents or anything that treats a donated relay as free capacity.

05What the software does and does not do

We want to be straight about this, because privacy marketing often is not.

Onion routing hides your IP address from the sites you visit, and stops your network provider seeing which sites you connect to. No single relay in the chain knows both who you are and where you went. That is genuinely useful, and it is what this product does.

It does not make you anonymous. You can still be identified by:

• signing in to accounts;
• browser fingerprinting, especially if you resize windows or install extensions;
• information you type into websites;
• malware already on your computer;
• an adversary able to observe both ends of your connection at once.

Nor is it fast. Your traffic takes three extra hops across volunteer relays. That is the cost of the separation, and no setting will remove it.

The exit relay can see any traffic that is not itself encrypted. Use HTTPS, and treat an unencrypted page on Tor as you would treat one on open public Wi-Fi.

The circuit and leak information the app shows comes from your own connection and from public sources. It is provided for information. Do not rely on it alone for a security decision, and do not use this software where being identified would put you in danger without understanding its limits first.

06Availability

The Tor network is not ours. Relays go up and down, countries block access, and performance varies for reasons entirely outside our control. We do not promise that you will be able to connect at any given moment, or that any particular site will be reachable through it.

We aim to keep this website and the licensing server running, but do not promise uninterrupted availability.

07Third-party software

ROMbug Onion includes Tor, which carries the routing, and components of the Chromium and Qt projects. These remain the property of their authors and are used under their own licences. Nothing in these terms affects your rights under those licences.

ROMbug is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Tor Project. “Tor” and the Tor Project's marks belong to the Tor Project, Inc., and are used here only to describe the network the software connects to.

08Our intellectual property

ROMbug Onion, the ROMbug and ROMbug Onion names and logos, and the design of the application and this website belong to us. Buying a licence gives you the right to use the software, not to copy, modify, reverse engineer or redistribute it, except where the law gives you that right regardless.

09Warranties and liability

The software is provided as is. To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim relating to the software is limited to the amount you paid us for it. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including lost profits or lost data.

10Ending the agreement

You may stop using the software at any time. Because the purchase is one-off, there is nothing to cancel.

We may revoke your licence if you breach these terms or if we are required to by law. If we discontinue the product we will say so, and your existing copy will keep working.

11Changes to these terms

We may update these terms for new purchases. The terms that apply to you are the ones published on the day you bought your licence, and we will not change those retroactively in a way that reduces your rights.

12Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Vermont, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Vermont, and you and we agree to that jurisdiction.

If you live somewhere whose consumer law gives you the right to bring a claim locally, this section does not take that right away.

Before starting a formal dispute, please write to us. Most problems are quicker to fix by email.
